Architektur ist bekanntermaßen ein weites Feld, auf dem es sich trefflich streiten und kontrovers debattieren lässt. Viele Debatten sind daher auch diesmal zu erwarten, wenn Leipzig nun schon zum siebenten Mal den "Archtiekturpreis der Stadt leipzig zur Förderung der Baukultur" auslobt.

Da gilt es natürlich schon gewisse Voraussetzungen erfüllen, die durchaus gänzlich unterschiedlicher Natur sein können. Hauptsache sei aber, so Martin zur Nedden: “Die Objekte müssen richtungsweisende Antworten auf die aktuellen Fragestellungen der Leipziger Stadtentwicklung liefern.”
Ob sie das nun tun oder nicht tun, darüber entscheidet eine hochkarätige Jury, bei deren Auswahl man darauf Wert legt, dass sie von außerhalb Leipzigs kommt und dass deren Mitglieder nicht baulich in Leipzig tätig werden oder geworden sind. Durchaus nicht selbstverständlich wie der Baubürgermeister betont: “Architekturpreise gibt es in vielen Städten. Allerdings kommt dort auch die Jury aus der Stadt. So eine Nabelschau wollen wir nicht. Mit unserem Modell sind wir sogar richtungsweisend. Essen zum Beispiel lobt auch so einen Preis aus und hat sich bei der Vorgehensweise dabei an uns ausgerichtet.”

Am 1. September befindet also eine siebenköpfige Jury unter Vorsitz von Peter Conradi, einem Stuttgarter Architekten, über die eingereichten Objekte. Sie vergibt maximal drei Hauptpreise sowie lobende Erwähnungen. Das die Jury “hochkarätig” besetzt ist, wie Martin zur Nedden hervorhob, ist unbestreitbar, gehören ihr doch neben dem erwähnten Vorsitzenden u.a. die Berliner Architektin Prof. Hilde Léon, der Münchner Architekt Prof. Amandus Sattler oder der Architekturtheoretiker Prof. Dr. Ullrich Schwarz von der TU Graz an. Die Preisverleihung erfolgt am 13. Oktober im Rahmen des Mitteldeutschen Bauforums durch Oberbürgermeister Jung und den Baubürgermeister.
Allerdings ist der Preis nicht dotiert. Man macht es sozusagen der Ehre halber. Aber das alleine würde dem nicht gerecht werden, wie der Baubürgermeister dazu meint: “Dieser Preis ist dennoch wichtig, weil er die Architekten und Bauherren anspornt, im Sinne der Baukultur, die in dieser Stadt eine immerhin rund 1000-jährige Tradition hat, Qualität und Funktionalität der Architektur zu optimieren. Ein Mehr an Qualität bedeutet nicht ein Mehr an Kosten, sondern die optimale Nutzung bei gleichbleibenden oder sogar niedrigeren Kosten.

Vom 18. Oktober bis 4. November werden alle Beiträge in der Unteren Wandelhalle des neuen Rathauses öffentlich ausgestellt. Zur Ausstellung erscheint ein Katalog, in dem alle eingereichten Objekte verzeichnet sind. Wie unterschiedlich die Objekte sind, die im Laufe der Jahre an dem Wettbewerb teilgenommen haben, mag man an einer kleinen Auswahl erkennen. So war schon das KPMG-Gebäude in der Beethovenstraße 1998 dabei. Damals wurde heiß darüber diskutiert, ob der kühne Entwurf in das alte Gebäudeensemble passt. Heute verliert man kein Wort mehr darüber. Die Zeitlosigkeit dieses Entwurfs hat sich somit bestätigt.

“Sweetwater” – die Stadthäuser an der Weißen Elster aus dem Wettbewerb 2006 sind heute Hingucker für alle, die per Boot die Wasserstadt Leipzig erkunden. Die gläserne Automanufaktur von BMW im Norden, auch 2006 dabei, ist längst ein Touristenmagnet, so dass die Besucherströme fast gar nicht mehr aufgenommen werden können. Als rein funktionales Gebäude sei zum Schluss das Bambus-Parkhaus am Zoo erwähnt, das 2004 beim Architekturpreis dabei war. Nimmt man all die Gebäude und Objekte, die bisher an den Auslobungen teilgenommen haben einmal zusammen, ergibt sich alleine dadurch eine Route von Sehenswürdigkeiten, (ob schön oder nicht läge letztendlich im Auge des Betrachters), die es durchaus wert ist, entdeckt zu werden.
